Planning for the Final Task: location, health, schedule, and more

Image
My schedule for filming and editing will most likely be longer than my other projects. Taking all of the things I need to do into account this is what I have come up with. However, I am keeping in mind that things may come up or change with time. If they do I will document them. Scheduling: Ideally I will begin filming next week. I am unsure of the window of time I have in order to complete this project so for now I will say that I plan to begin filming by March 3. Because I want to give myself time I plan to be done with filming and begin editing by March 24 at the latest. Ideally editing will be done by March 30.  This is because I think I will likely spend many hours of the day editing and since it is not dependent on things such as lighting or location coordinating, I will have more room to maneuver when and where I work on it. I will then take a couple of days (at most 2-3) in order to gain feedback from my peers and those around me. Location: I will be filming in the ge...

Title Research: Watch the Titles Website

Image
Upon entering the site I began to navigate it by clicking on the options at the top. After establishing where they led to I then attempted to find title sequences that interest me and could help me gain knowledge. The ones I stumbled upon made it clear just how complex the process of a title sequence can be. The usage of real life elements and tech such as editing software along with 3-D software make just about anything possible. Some title sequences are completely software made, without any background scenes that include real life. I was particularly intrigued by these because they seemed to be on a whole other level from the others. They did not go into in-depth detail. However, it was enough to grasp how they did it in a general sense. I learned that you can take something and scan it into the software and then build on it from there. This intrigued me greatly. Another thing I learned was that the title sequence when it comes to storyboarding can constantly change. After readi...

Title Research: Art of the Title Website

Image
I am looking at the website to learn. In order to make a good opening sequence I first need to learn about what is inserted into one. How one is created. And what goes into that process. At first when I began to look at the sight I was overwhelmed. This is because I clicked title sequences and a plethora of movie title sequences showed up to choose from. Eventually I began to click the ones I was interested in and watched the openings. After watching the openings, I would scroll down and read the interview and credits. While reading I learned that there is a lot that goes into creating a title sequence. I always thought that it was a relatively simple process but I was wrong. They have to deal with the technical side such as the type, texturizing it, and animating it. While also dealing with the film side by establishing what should be seen in the title sequence as the type is shown. I have learned that in order to make this a success the director and the people who work on the t...

Genre Research: Scary Movie

Image
This movie is a parody comedy. It's an overall parody of the genre of horror. It uses elements of comedy such as high lighting while presenting itself as a 'horror'.  The main element of comedy I noted was exaggeration. This movie specifically exaggerates by having the actors overreact to small moments and underact to major moments. The characters contradict themselves and are the butt of the joke due to their collective unawareness. And this is all amusing to the viewer. I like these aspects. I also enjoy how the editing is smooth but not particularly fast-paced unless its at certain points. It is not uncommon for comedy to have obscene language but this film highlights its usage by inserting it into situations that would be deemed inappropriate which adds to its shock and ultimately funny effect. The elements that I did not like are the exaggeration.  I did like it but eventually it became predictable and a little annoying when what you expect to happen happens. Howev...

Genre Research: Mean Girls

Image
This movie has elements of satire comedy. The combination of the dialogue, setting, and editing sells the movie. It's just one big joke. The elements that I noted was the use of high lighting, the music that was used to emphasize the scenes, and the happy ending.  I like that it makes fun of the idea of the 'popular girls' throughout the entire movie by using various exaggerated situations to show the ridiculousness of the notion. I also like the usage of cuts and close-ups to show the back and forth of conversation and the character's nonverbal reactions. What I particularly noted was the stereotypical characters and their attire. For example, the goth wore all black. I think the editing also highlighted the hilarity. It quickly jumps from one situation to another, one place to another. When one absurd thing ends, another begins. The ending showcases the satire of it all by making fun of the bus situation. I think that it is brilliant because it seems to be a joke ab...

Genre Research: Norbit

Image
Upon watching the movie Norbit I began to see elements of comedy. For example, the situation that is just absurd enough to be hilarious. In the movie, the main character Norbit is an orphan. This is established at the beginning. There is a flashback. The flashback shows him being thrown out of a car in front of an orphanage and the car immediately zooms off. From the description it would sound like a sad scene or moment but it's a part of a storytelling sequence and is presented in a way that it is amusing if not laughable. Norbit's overall situation is much the same (his marriage and home life). The movie contains elements of the genre such as stereotypical characters, high lighting, a community-like setting, and fast-paced editing . I like the stereotypical characters  because rather than being offensive the movie quite clearly is just one huge joke. As each situation progresses, the fast-paced editing establishes a comedic rhythm.  And what makes it so good is that i...

Genre Decision

Image
After consideration I have decided that the genre of my opening sequence will be comedy. Thrillers and horrors are good, but different. Creating an opening for one that conveys the genre to the audience can be bad if not done properly. The same goes for any genre. However, I feel that with comedy I can more easily envision an opening. In fact, I already have ideas. Whereas with horror I did not envision anything. And with thriller I could not think of something within the reach of my resources. Plus I feel that if I chose either of those genres I would focus so much on perfection that it would suck the fun out of the process. With comedy that problem is easily fixed seeing as creating something funny would have to be fun. If it is not then the end product will most likely be the reflection of the lack of fun. And since it is light-hearted and funny that I am going for I am able to weigh ideas that would usually seem so-so for other genres but could be within reach with this one. ...

Genre Research: Comedy & Thriller

Image
Common camera angles found in thrillers are close-ups, mid-shots, and wide shots. Typically they are used to highlight a characters reaction or to show what is going on around the character. Common camera angles in comedy are close-ups to highlight a character's reaction to a comedic situation. Wide-shots can also be used to highlight various funny things happening simultaneously in a scene. Common movements for both genres are zoom ins. For thrillers these, along with zoom outs and tilts, can be used to highlight the effect of what is going on. For comedies these can be used to convey the joke or funny moment. Comedy, specifically can use movements to its comedic advantage. Costumes for both genres tend to vary. However, the clothing of the characters is typically what would be considered casual unless there is a special occasion or event. Lighting for thrillers is typically low in order to induce the feel of suspense. and establish the atmosphere. Using low light allows the shad...

Genre Research : Horror

Image
At the beginning of the year, I created a PowerPoint based on research about the genre of horror. Describing the common things found in horror movies. The PowerPoint would not embed so I will insert a picture of one of the slides here and then list the important parts of the slides in bulleted format.

My Pitch

Image
For my pitch, my first idea is to make an opening scene for a groundhog day themed film. I have always loved the idea of a main character reliving the same day over and over again. This is because there are so many variables that can change in one day. One day, the character could go about their normal life. The next they could travel to a completely different state or country and go berserk. In the end they always wake up in the same place, at the same time, and on the same day. The only downside is that these types of films can be predictable. However, the good side is that I am simply doing an opening and not an entire film. For my second idea I have decided to make an opening for a comedy-drama. At first I considered some other genre but in the end I decided to go with this one as my second idea because I like what I envisioned when I thought about the opening. I envisioned a montage of quick shots that established setting more than it did character. In the end, I decided to g...

Starting the Final Task

Image
Hi, I am Michal Pringle. I am a senior. I attend Fort Lauderdale High School. For my final project, I  have decided to work alone. Before making this decision I assessed what I knew what I could account for and what I could not. I already knew that I would have certain limitations. For example, when it comes to filming in a different location other than my home I would have to wait until the late afternoon to do so on weekdays. I also would be limited to filming for about an hour in the AM on days where I have school. However,  I knew I could film afterschool in the afternoons, during the morning on Saturdays, or at any time on Sunday. If I were to do this with a group these limitations would most likely hinder our progress so I decided not to do so. I also took into account my own stance when it comes to group work. I know that I am not exactly a group person. Working with others can be difficult at times. I figured not having to deal with conflict or differing opinions...
