Genre Research: Comedy & Thriller
- Common camera angles found in thrillers are close-ups, mid-shots, and wide shots. Typically they are used to highlight a characters reaction or to show what is going on around the character. Common camera angles in comedy are close-ups to highlight a character's reaction to a comedic situation. Wide-shots can also be used to highlight various funny things happening simultaneously in a scene.
- Common movements for both genres are zoom ins. For thrillers these, along with zoom outs and tilts, can be used to highlight the effect of what is going on. For comedies these can be used to convey the joke or funny moment. Comedy, specifically can use movements to its comedic advantage.
- Costumes for both genres tend to vary. However, the clothing of the characters is typically what would be considered casual unless there is a special occasion or event.
- Lighting for thrillers is typically low in order to induce the feel of suspense. and establish the atmosphere. Using low light allows the shadows to build on this. The lighting for comedies is typically is natural and/or high, this is because it is supposed to be lighthearted and funny.
- Thrillers typically use the theme of solitude. They do this by making the setting a place that seems lonesome (like an empty house away from others) and making it so there are few to no characters besides the main actor. They add to this feeling by making the weather gloomy or dreary in a sense (making it so there is no unfiltered sunshine).
- Comedies typically have a main character that is not alone. The setting can range from a bustling house to a relatively peaceful apartment building. The main character is placed into a situation or is in a situation that is in some way absurd enough to be laughter- worthy yet somewhat believable. The weather is usually sunny, unless it not being so would drive home a joke.
- Both genres use fast-paced editing. However, thrillers use them to show tension and anxiety while comedies use them to make sense of a fast-paced situation.
- Common sounds in both genres are music. However, in thrillers it is usually anxiety or tension inducing music while with comedies it is usually music that can highlight and work well with the hilarity of the situation.
- Examples of films that I like from both genres are American Psycho and Tag. Elements of the genres that appeal to me are the suspense and tension in thrillers and the absurdness of comedies.
