Genre Research: Norbit
Upon watching the movie Norbit I began to see elements of comedy. For example, the situation that is just absurd enough to be hilarious. In the movie, the main character Norbit is an orphan. This is established at the beginning. There is a flashback. The flashback shows him being thrown out of a car in front of an orphanage and the car immediately zooms off. From the description it would sound like a sad scene or moment but it's a part of a storytelling sequence and is presented in a way that it is amusing if not laughable. Norbit's overall situation is much the same (his marriage and home life). The movie contains elements of the genre such as stereotypical characters, high lighting, a community-like setting, and fast-paced editing . I like the stereotypical characters because rather than being offensive the movie quite clearly is just one huge joke. As each situation progresses, the fast-paced editing establishes a comedic rhythm. And what makes it so good is that it takes what could be a depressing real-life story about dissatisfaction and love and flips it. Although the movie is absurd it is just believable enough to relate to real lives and yet it is still hilariously funny. And while being so it teaches a lesson to the viewers through various themes such as love, self-worth, and confidence. For example, although the movie is a comedy through and through, as it progresses the main character gains confidence and realizes his self-worth. This is all done through the lens of comedy. I would go so far as to say there are no elements that I did not like. I feel that this movie took the somewhat generality of the comedy genre and used it to it's advantage. All while being light-hearted. I think when it comes to this genre this movie may be a prime example.
