Genre Research: Mean Girls
This movie has elements of satire comedy. The combination of the dialogue, setting, and editing sells the movie. It's just one big joke. The elements that I noted was the use of high lighting, the music that was used to emphasize the scenes, and the happy ending. I like that it makes fun of the idea of the 'popular girls' throughout the entire movie by using various exaggerated situations to show the ridiculousness of the notion. I also like the usage of cuts and close-ups to show the back and forth of conversation and the character's nonverbal reactions. What I particularly noted was the stereotypical characters and their attire. For example, the goth wore all black. I think the editing also highlighted the hilarity. It quickly jumps from one situation to another, one place to another. When one absurd thing ends, another begins. The ending showcases the satire of it all by making fun of the bus situation. I think that it is brilliant because it seems to be a joke about a joke. I do not think there were any elements that did not appeal to me. Before now I had never realized how much of a comedy this movie was. I always watched it as a teen movie rather than a teen comedy movie. But now that I fully grasp the concept of what it was trying to convey and how the director and actors are doing so I see the overall picture. This movie is definitely in a niche. However, it still has elements of the general overview of comedy.
