Genre Research : Horror

At the beginning of the year, I created a PowerPoint based on research about the genre of horror. Describing the common things found in horror movies. The PowerPoint would not embed so I will insert a picture of one of the slides here and then list the important parts of the slides in bulleted format.

  • The common lighting usually used in horror is low-key due to the tension and mysterious, dark atmosphere it creates. It emphasizes the control over how much of the characters and surroundings are revealed.
  • Common camera angles include the high angle and low angle shot.  This is because the low angle shot can often produce a menacing aura in horror, while the high angle shot can invoke a helpless, vulnerable feeling.
  • Common movements in this genre include pans, zooms, tracks, and in some cases hand-held. The Blair Witch Project has examples of hand-held movements and pans. The Conjuring 2     has examples of zooms and tracks.
  • Common Mis-En-Scenes are isolated areas such as a house, cabin, or mansion away from the city and potentially surrounded by the forest. These places typically have what is deemed creepy areas such as a basement, attic, or room that characters feel unsettled in or are warned away from. The aim is to have a setting that is already suspicious in order capitalize off the feeling of being alone, but not quite by yourself.
  • Elements of horror include foreshadowing, fear, suspense, mystery, and imagination. The aim is to keep the viewers guessing and on high alert. It is common for there to be supernatural elements such as demons, ghosts, or other malevolent forces to be involved. Other elements are killers/slashers or physical manifestations of psychological problems/issues.
  • Common sounds in horror are sounds that indicate that a killer is nearby or there. Examples are Jason's Theme and Michael Myer's Theme .
