Genre Research: Scary Movie
This movie is a parody comedy. It's an overall parody of the genre of horror. It uses elements of comedy such as high lighting while presenting itself as a 'horror'. The main element of comedy I noted was exaggeration. This movie specifically exaggerates by having the actors overreact to small moments and underact to major moments. The characters contradict themselves and are the butt of the joke due to their collective unawareness. And this is all amusing to the viewer. I like these aspects. I also enjoy how the editing is smooth but not particularly fast-paced unless its at certain points. It is not uncommon for comedy to have obscene language but this film highlights its usage by inserting it into situations that would be deemed inappropriate which adds to its shock and ultimately funny effect. The elements that I did not like are the exaggeration. I did like it but eventually it became predictable and a little annoying when what you expect to happen happens. However, the movie was meant to mock and that is what it did. With that being said, the movie definitely had the absurdness factor of comedy. In fact, its absurdness is what makes it so amusing. What I have realized so far with my comedy movie research is that each movie I have watched is indeed comedy, but it is a different genre. The first was more of an overall comedy. The second a teen. And this one is a parody. I have realized that my research has allowed me to make distinctions within the genre.
